We’re not big into the Olympics and general policies surrounding the event but we can’t deny our love for Johnny Weir. Watch this great piece about the totally outrageous treatment of our favourite skater in the media.

0007_###A lot has been said about the reopening of the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. So much so that I don’t want this piece by Kristine Nutting on Prairie Artsters to get missed.

Ted Kerr, as always, phrased it so well in a small Facebook discussion:

It would be easy to suggest that she is being anti-change or anti-modern but in truth she is asking us how we move ‘forward’ and what that means, and what we are leaving behind.

An excerpt:

I was at the Art Gallery of Alberta’s swishy opening party, Refinery, for the young swish set of Edmonton last night. Perhaps what was noticeable right off the bat was the lack of strangers there, the lack of people unknown. All the people neatly clung to their identifiable groups. There were no strangers to flirt with, no one even alone, as though people don’t do that: go anywhere alone. All of them coupled off save for a few of the power lesbians in town who I am often left to flirt with by default. I had no idea art gallery openings were a date thing. I proceeded to look at this new miracle of Edmonton all by myself.

The rest at Prairie Artsters

Beautiful Thing

24th
Jan. × ’10

downloadFrom the official press release:

Walterdale Playhouse brings you into Jonathan Harvey’s tale of two boys, who, in the middle of the dreary, bleak setting of a London council estate, discover sparks of life and love, with Beautiful Thing. Enveloped in a simple, beautiful story about a myriad of relationships – family, romance and friendship, we meet Jamie and Ste who discover the different levels of love and trust.
Jamie has a crush on classmate Ste. When Ste is beaten by his brother so badly, he stays over with Jamie and his mother Sandra. In the absence of a third bed, Jamie and Ste begin their journey sleeping top-to-toe. Meanwhile Ste’s mother, Sandra, begins a tenuous journey with a troublesome neighbour, Leah.
“For me, Beautiful Thing is about love; a realistic love,” says Justen Bennett, Director of Beautiful Thing. “Those simple, small loves that you have. This is a story set against a harsh, urban background with working class characters that are proud, stubborn, and not always nice to one another. The love in this play doesn’t inspire a dramatic change, but brings a small spark of life and hope to people who don’t always have a lot of hope. Beautiful Thing reminds us, even in the harshest of surroundings, how simple, pure, and tender love can be.”

Oh, Edmonton

22nd
Jan. × ’10

This weekend will serve as reminder of why we love this city. You still have a chance to catch PIG as part of the Canoe Theatre Festival.

“a rock music spectacle that dares us to consider what we consume as entertainment” – Michael Clark, Curator

In a surreal prairie landscape, wayward girls are being lured into the tent-prayer meetings of a glamorous female evangelist. She and her bible-salesman boyfriend quickly groom their new devotees into peep-show players, presenting acts that delight, horrify, and ensure salvation. There is no who-done-it here, no crime to solve, no story to unravel. At this peep show nothing matters but everything has a price. It’s a backward world where public execution is a performance, and accidental necrophiliacs can find redemption in true love.

Starting Friday you can catch At The Same Time , a contemporary photography exhibition, at the 19575_273047043744_767598744_4331807_8118849_nArtery.

At the Same Time is an exhibition that explores the concept of borders, both real and imagined. Consisting of the work of five different artists, the work explores the boundaries that exist between two people and those that separate those two people from the rest of the world.

Edmonton’s own Ted Kerr and Zach Ayotte are a part of the exhibit and we couldn’t be more excited to see it for ourselves.

Opening Reception on Friday, January 22, 2010, 7 – 10 p.m. at the ARTery 9535 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton. Dirty Dance Party with DJ Double Tights to follow!

Visit the Facebook event page for more information.

Police Warnings and Sexual Violence: The Mobilization of the Garneau Sisterhood
2009/10 Inside/OUT Speakers’ Series

Thursday, January 7th, 5-6pm
Room 128 (1st floor), Education SOUTH building.
Presented by Dr. Lise Gotell, Professor, Women Studies, UofA

From the Facebook event page:
In 2008, a series of sexual assaults occurred in an Edmonton neighborhood bordering the University of Alberta. Edmonton police service did not release any information until three women living within a one-block radius were sexually assaulted by a man who broke into their homes in the middle of the night. After a fourth attack on an elderly woman in suburban middle class neighborhood, the police warnings intensified. All women “living alone” were advised to be vigilant, and “lock their doors and windows.” In response to these events, an anonymous group of neighborhood women calling themselves the Garneau Sisterhood mounted in a poster and media campaign. This campaign was marked by great irreverence and a Do-It-Yourself (DYI) style of activism that is characteristic of third wave feminism. It challenged and mocked the disciplinary and individualizing thrust of police warnings. In this talk, I explore the contemporary construction of sexual violence through technologies of risk management. In its creative and edgy challenge to risk management discourses the Garneau Sisterhood campaign stands as an example of the productive possibilities of contemporary grassroots antirape activism.

Check out this article in Express News or visit the website that comes up when you google the Sisterhood.
