Following is an excerpt from his post. I highly recommend it as it explores the complexities of being a queer artist of colour in a predominantly white culture—being proud of your art and your accomplishments but unable to share with your own.

To share something so personal with everyone except with the ones who made me feels like a betrayal. So does the book itself: exposing our family, telling their stories, stories which aren’t mine. “What happens in the home, stays in the home,” my mom would warn us. Which betrayal is worse? Which betrayal weighs more?

Exposure: Edmonton’s Queer Arts and Cultural Festival is seeking applications from independent artists and collectives from the greater Edmonton region for its fourth annual festival. This nine-day festival happens 12 – 20 November 2010 and will feature a mixture of emerging and established artists exploring, examining and questioning queer culture through a filter of humour. We want to program work that examines the power of humour to transform us, to anger us and to challenge us. We are seeking smart, sassy, sexy work that moves you and others exploring queer issues that make us laugh, cry, feel uncomfortable in our bodies and unite communities. Set against the dynamic backdrop of Edmonton, Alberta, Exposure festival is an excellent opportunity to connect with diverse communities and interdisciplinary art.

The deadline for application is 22 July 2010. Mailed submissions must be postmarked no later than 22 July 2010.

ABOUT EXPOSURE – Edmonton’s Queer Arts and Culture Festival

Exposure uncovers, highlights and celebrates queer arts and culture. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, this annual festival presents challenging, smart, powerful work that captures queer life and culture, and provides entry points for Queer communities and their allies.
