Going Down

16th
Jun. × ’10

A_single_white_feather_closeupTheater lovers, don’t miss the chance to catch the makings of what is sure to be a big hit next season:

Running In Heels Productions Presents:
The workshop production of Going Down…

By Lana Hughes

The Living Room Playhouse (Azimuth Theatre) (11315 106 AVE NW)

Thursday, June 17th @ 8pm
Friday, June 18th @8pm

BY DONATION AT THE DOOR, CASH ONLY.

Come play a role in helping to develop this new script. This workshop production will be part staged reading, part performance. After each performance there will be a short talk back, where you will get your chance to talk about the work and help to prepare it for it’s full production during the 2010/2011 theatre season.

Going Down… is about going down the aisle, going down a new path in life, going down the road not taken. The story, explores the ideas of boundaries, both in terms of the kind of space where women feel safe, and the sexual boundaries that are so dominant in our culture. It examines the lives of seven women who are all dealing with love and friendship in the modern world. Asking the question if it’s safe to follow your heart when it can get you into trouble–either with you friends, or with the world around you.

Running In Heels Productions is a non-profit, exclusively female, theatre collective endeavoring to create a strong female artistic community that works together to create bold theatrical works exploring women’s lives and the issues surrounding them. Currently the only feminist theatre company in Edmonton, Running In Heels is committed to providing an avenue for women to tell their stories, recognizing the social, political, economic and ethnic diversity among them.

Featuring: Mari Chartier, Samantha Duff, Kayla Gorman, Jenny McKillop, Jessica Peverett, Caley Suliak, Laryssa Toroshenko. Directed by: Michelle Kennedy

THE BOYFRIENDS with MASS CHOIR

A VERY affordable $5.00 Cover
Door @ 8:00ish, Bands @ 9:30ish
Dancing and great times @ ∞ (aka FOREVER !!!) with DJ Campos (aka ME!!)

BUZZ:
“Madonna stole her early incarnations from the gays and now The Boyfriends are stealing back, basking in the glowstick aura of club-sound hooks, glittery synth flourishes, and hip-shimmy beats. Pete Shelley is their fairy godfather, bequeathing The Boyfriends a post-punk futurist guitarscape edged in rhythmic urgency.Ebullient golden-era indie popsters like Beat Happening, Talulah Gosh, and Cub are touchstones, while nostalgia for their 80s childhood manifests in energetically percolating video game bleeps and chirps burrowed into Boyfriends’ songs. A prairie hometown gives them a love of handclaps and the unruly mayhem of garage bands held together with spit, hope, and sheer delight. Their lyrics reflect a sense of humour as broad as their sense of justice.” – Mary Christa O’Keefe

Repair-a-Thon!

12th
Jun. × ’10

benefits_bike

Edmonton sure comes alive in the summer. June is also Bike Month. Many great events to enjoy but one that’s pretty spectacular is the 24 Hour Bicycle Repair-a-Thon. Hello, you can get your bike fixed any time of day this weekend at Bike Works.

From Facebook:

24 Hour Bicycle Repair-a-thon

Start Time: Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 12:00pm
End Time: Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 6:00pm
BikeWorks (10047 80 Ave, entrance through back alley only)

The EBC crew is on a mission: 24 hours of bicycle repairs. Stop by, hang out, bring your bike down, learn some mechanical magic, get dirty, have fun!

The regular shop fee for BikeWorks ($2/hr members; $5/hr non-members) will not be charged for this event as all Bike Month and Bikeology Festival events are free! This event is sponsored in part by the Edmonton Community Challenge held by Next Gen Edmonton and the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues.

(And yes, we’ll actually be going for 30 hours.)

Happy Pride!

Jun. × ’10

Picture 74

It’s going to be a beautiful weekend in Edmonton just in time for Pride. I will be posting events throughout the week. Saturday is the big parade. One very special thing to note is that the Edmonton chapter of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid will get to be part of the celebration. As some of you may know, there is big controversy over the group in Toronto and their denied entry into their parade. Read xtra.ca for great coverage on everything going down and for a story on those Edmontonians.

See you on the Square!

God Loves Hair is a collection of 20 short stories following a tender, intellectual, and curious child as he navigates complex realms of sexuality, gender, racial politics, religion, and belonging.

Told with the poignant insight and honesty that only the voice of a young mind can convey, each story is accompanied by a vivid illustration by Toronto artist Juliana Neufeld.

BUZZ

“A touching, poetic exploration of budding sexuality, the mysticism of religion and family dynamics.”
